Range Backpack

A few of our teammates put together the best range bags through the ringer at Range Often, so we could offer them to you here. Range backpacks, such as these, are commonly used by shooters who need to keep their hands free for carrying extra gear or their rifles. If you need to hike to the blind with all your gear as a hunter, or bring the entire arsenal as a three-gunner, you're in the right place.

We picked each range backpack with the same tough requirements of a quality range bag in mind: lightweight, comfortable on the shoulders and neck, rugged, and weather-resistant with an emphasis on function. No cheesy gimmicks or mall-ninja stuff.

Case Club Tactical 4-Pistol Backpack

The Case Club Backpack is a mobile gun locker with plenty of weatherproofing. It has a rain fly, the zippers are covered with waterproof rubber sleeves, it offers a sturdy foam shelf that securely holds up to four full-size pistols, and it includes plenty of smart little compartments to neatly tuck away your ammo, mags, ear and eye pro, targets, and other stuff for a full range day.

Big Features:

  • Dimensions: Approx. 19” H x 16” W x 10” D
  • Foam gun shelf holds (4) pistols (max length 8-5/8″)
  • Semi-rigid frame keeps bag upright under weight
  • Includes ammo cup and strap for securing targets
  • Pull-out rain cover protects bag & gear in wet weather
  • Lockable heavy-duty zippers provide added security
  • Zippers come with rubber seals for wet weather
  • Exterior shell and interior liner are water-resistant

Generation 2 upgrades:

  • Better water-resistant zippers
  • Stronger Cordura/Ballistic Material
  • Upgraded and improved stitching
  • Reinforced strap buckles for heavier load-bearing
  • Longer straps to accommodate body armor and comfort
  • Padlockable (with customer-supplied padlock)

We stuffed the foam shelf full with some full-size shooters: a 1911 G.I., CZ-75, Glock 23, and a S&W M&P 9. To test ear pro fitment, we stuck with an over-the-ear electronic headset, the Peltor Sport Tactical 100s. In the right-hand-side compartment, we filled each spare magazine pouch to add some weight. Our eye pro fits well inside the top-front compartment. You can also spy the spent shell casing cup in the top-right compartment.

GPS Tactical Range Backpack

This large range bag has big features in the small details. It can handle personal range load-out with some pistols, ammo, equipment, and magazines.

The GPS Tactical Range Backpack is a hybrid bag designed for the pistol shooter who has a slight case of OCD (or maybe you just like being organized). This tactical range bag carries a lot of ammo and weight, like a duffel, has removable compartments for your pistols and gear, it's weatherproof, and it's comfortable to carry like the right range bag.

Big Features:

  • (3) padded internal pistol storage cases w/ magazine pouches
  • (4) outside zippered pockets for ammo and accessories
  • Padded waist strap / cummerbund for stability
  • Pull-out rain cover for wet-weather range days
  • Visual I.D. Storage for organizing your gear
  • MOLLE webbing for extra PALS attachments
  • 1000-Denier Nylon with DuPont Teflon coating
  • Self-tracking YKK zippers that are lockable

Our Test Gear

We loaded the bag for a typical 3-hour range day: We threw in a heavy old 1911 G.I. with four extra 8-round magazines of .45 ACP and we tucked away a Glock 43x inside one of the removable pistol totes with two extra magazines seated in the bottom front compartment, also loaded. We used the second pistol tote bag for ammo: Three boxes of .40 S&W and two boxes of .45 ACP. We topped the bag off with your basic PPE, including some over-the-ear shooting muffs with plugs inside, and a tac-light for S's and giggles. In all, we were carrying around 300 rounds of ammo.

GPS Handgunner Backpack

GPS Tactical has a knack for making compact range backpacks and bags that can fit a ton of weapons and gear. How does the Handgunner Range Backpack stack up? Let's dive in with an in-depth review.

All buttoned up, the Handgunner Backpack is unassuming. The exterior pouches on the bag use hook-and-loop fasteners, so you can stick just about any Velcro ammo pouch or gear back on the outside (note the GPS rubber logo velcroed to the top-front compartment).

Primary Features

  • Exterior dimensions: 19" tall x 16" wide x 10" deep
  • Made from 1000D Ballistic Nylon with Velcro exterior
  • Dense foam gun shelf holds up to (4) full-size handguns
  • Capable of storing long-slide automatics and revolvers
  • Shell is water-resistant, pull-out rain fly covers entire bag
  • Internal frame keeps bag rigid when empty or shelf removed
  • Visual I.D. storage provides compartments for all your gear
  • Smooth YKK zippers with pull strings for easy access
  • Twin side pockets with (6) extra magazine pouches
  • Gear and Guns Tested

To test out typical range bag fitment with the gun shelf in the backpack, we loaded it up with 1911s, a Glock 19 (gen 4), a Smith & Wesson M&P9c, and a Walther P99AS. These larger handguns put the capacity of the gun storage shelf to the test. We also included plenty of magazines and gear (eye pro and shooting muffs) to try out the various compartments.

Quality Range Backpacks We Tested Ourselves

The small details separate a good range bag from a mediocre one. That’s why we pulled options from top names like GPS Tactical and put them to the test by stuffing ‘em full of our own gear and taking them for a spin. All backpacks we have approved come with the features you know and need in a perfect range bag: ballistic nylon and rugged fabrics that resist fraying and tearing; Visual ID storage with labeled and fitted compartments to keep your gear organized in the same place; padded pistol range bags pouches and protective cases that are up to snuff; and of course, plenty of extra MOLLE and straps so you can throw your own shooting range bag and extra kit there.

Visual ID System

One of the reasons we partnered with GPS is because of their unique Visual ID storage system. This system uses custom-made pouches and containers across all GPS bags to provide convenient and organized storage solutions for all your range gear, so you can be prepared for any situation. Each pouch is sized and labeled for a particular piece of equipment. The legend below displays all the available compartments in the Visual ID system. When shopping and comparing GPS Tactical Range Backpack, you should note on each product page what each gun range bag contains based on the Visual ID icons displayed:
